Our goal is to share and showcase the richness of the Azerbaijani arts, culture and heritage in Greece, while highlighting the deep-lying common cultural ties and values between Greece and Azerbaijan as the result of the long-lasting bilateral cultural, political and diplomatic relations of the two countries. Promoting cultural diversity based on the common historical and cultural roots are an important part of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy to facilitate and promote the respect for cultural diversity.

Who is organizing the Cultural Season?
The Azerbaijani Cultural Season in Greece is being made possible thanks to the generous support of the Heydar Alieyev Foundation and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Greece.

The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been established on the grounds of the nation’s wish to express its esteem for the memory of Heydar Aliyev, who entered the history as a builder of an independent state, and the necessity of reflecting his rich moral heritage, underlining the importance for the country of the philosophy of Azerbaijanism and cultivating the national statehood ideas in our children.

Starting its activity since 2004, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been actively participating in building a new society and contributing to the social and economic development of the country, by implementing various projects in spheres such as education, public health, culture, sports,

science and technology, environment, and social and other spheres.

First Lady of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva is the President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

The support of the Embassy of Azerbaijan to the Hellenic Republic for cultural events is longstanding and the cultural dimension remains one of the priorities of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Greece. Beside the exchanges on various fields of science, education and culture, numerous cultural, educational and scientific visits and events have been arranged on the mutual basis.

What is the Azerbaijani Culture known for?

There are only few nations in the world that are historically and culturally as rich and diverse as the Azerbaijani culture. The combination of its European and Islamic heritage, infused and complimented by the influences of the Western World and Soviet Union, has led to a widely acknowledged variety of cultural influences and experiences in which Azerbaijan stands out, especially in dance, music, folk art, architecture, theatre and cookery.

Azerbaijani dances

Dance music, along with favorite genre of music, is one of the widely spread and important components of national folklore music. Folklore dances are the basis of the Azeri national instrumental music. The dances are created by the people and passes through generations. Instrumental folklore dance music of Azerbaijan is characterized by richness of music, symmetric structure, diversity of diapason, gradual intensification, repetition, variation and method of sequence. Dances are distinguished by specific tune, metro-rhythmic properties and colorful forms. Like folklore songs, dances also reflect people's feelings, emotions, character and temperament.

Collective dances are also popular among the population. Most of them accompany working process and household ceremonies. The dance "Halay" is one of these dances. Vaghzaly usually accompanies weddings. The dance "Yordu-yordu" can be performed by both men and women. The most ancient collective dance is a widely spread "Yally", which dates back to ancient times.

Azerbaijani music

The most important genre of musical and poetic creative activity of Azeri people are the folklore songs which perfectly reflect the moral inner world, wishes and expectations of Azeri people.

Folklore songs of Azerbaijan are divided into several genre groups depending on their theme and content, difference in a poetic language and many-coloredness. These groups are labor songs, ceremonial songs, household songs (lyrical songs are also included in this group) and historical songs.
